Examination & Digital X-rays

Regular Check ups are helpful in detecting early signs of disease. Problems can be treated at a manageable stage. On average, seeing a dentist every 6 months works well for most people. Others may need more frequent visits. People with very little risk of cavities or gum disease can schedule their check ups once a year. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months, or more.

This high-risk group includes:

  • Smokers

  • Diabetics

  • People with recurrent gum disease

  • People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection

  • People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque

Xrays may need to be taken to get a clearer picture in some cases.

Restorative Dentistry-Tooth Decay & Fillings

Restorative therapy is the provision of fillings for missing tooth structure due to decay or trauma. Fillings can be made of composite resin (white) or amalgam (silver metal). While composite resin fillings have a better appearance, amalgam fillings are stronger and more resistant to heavy grinding forces on back teeth.

A large cavity in a tooth can benefit from an Inlay or an Onlay. An Inlay or Onlay is designed to protect the remaining tooth from fracture. The Inlay or Onlay is made of porcelain or gold, and is custom made in a laboratory before it is cemented into the tooth. Porcelain or gold is superior to composite resin and amalgam.

Periodontal Treatment - Gingivitis & Gum Disease

Peridontal disease ("gum disease") is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. The disease attacks the gums and supporting bone resulting in bleeding gums, receeding gums, bone loss, loose teeth and pain. Plaque and calculus are the primary causes of gum disease. The type of treatment depends upon how advanced the disease has progressed. Individualised treatment may include frequent cleaning, root planing (deep cleaning), gingivectomy and flap surgery.
